  • Load Bus @ 5:00 PM

Arrival (est. 6:30)

  • Unload Rhythm Gear FIRST and take to the hallway behind the auditorium (Alex, lead the way!)
  • Rhythm section - remain in hallway and assemble so the equipment is ready for warm-up (there will be a drum kit in the warm-up room, so the kit will move directly to the stage)
  • Wind Players - follow Kennedy to Room 227
  • Eat, Drink, and Be Merry! 

Classroom @ 8:30

  • Warm-up Individually (5 minutes)
  • Section Tuning (5 minutes) 
  • Excerpts (10 minutes - Leads…think about these on the bus ride so you are prepared!)
    • Brass > DON’T WASTE CHOPS! Sing/Sizzle/Get In The Zone!) 
  • Leave for Warm-up @ 8:50

Warm-up Room @ 8:55

  • Reverse show order (Huesos, Waiting, Rhythm)
  • Starts/Transitions/Stops

  • Cheer for everyone, cheer LOUDEST for Hempfield! 
  • We do adjudicated festivals to receive feedback and expose ourselves to what else is out there. Whether we receive the highest rating (Superior) or the lowest rating (Very Good), we will ultimately get better by looking at the ratings, listening to the comments, and using the feedback to improve as an ensemble. That is the point!

2016 Jazz One Info and Audition Materials

The mission of Hempfield Jazz is to develop musicianship and appreciation through jazz education and performance. Hempfield Jazz is open to students in grades nine through twelve of all ability levels. To be considered for Jazz One, students must be enrolled in Band or Orchestra and/or a music elective course (i.e. Guitar, Music Production, Piano, Theory) with immediate intentions to join a large performing ensemble. 

Hempfield Jazz One is the premier big band at Hempfield High School and is intended for the most advanced and serious musicians. Emphasis is placed on the performance of challenging jazz literature, developing intermediate-advanced improvisation skills, and performing at festivals and venues throughout the region. Interested students must complete a Hempfield Jazz Audition to be considered for Jazz One. 

Rehearsals > Mondays and Thursdays (3:15 - 5:00)

Rehearsals will begin immediately following Holiday Break!

Audition Information

All students interested in being a part of Jazz One or Jazz Combos must submit an audition recording to Mr. Gumble via Schoology. Audition materials are available at bands.hempfieldsd.org (under the BKJazz Tab)

Audition recordings must be received by Friday, December 18th. Audition results will be posted by Holiday Break.


Audition Scoring

Students will be evaluated using the Hempfield High School Band “Performance and Playing Test Rubric”




Audition materials are available at the US Army Blues & You site. In addition to PDF downloads of parts, you will also find recordings for reference and practice. This year, we will be working on two pieces from this repertoire list: 
  • Freddie's Side of the Blues
  • Waiting For Your Call
Your audition should be a recording of you playing the following excerpts: 
  • Excerpt 1 > EITHER 
    • Freddie's Side of the Blues > Letter E-F or 
    • Freddie's Side of the Blues > Letter H-I
  • Excerpt 2 > Waiting > Letter G-H4
Recordings should be submitted via Schoology by Friday, December 18th.

Hempfield Jazz Two

This is the cadet big band at Hempfield High School and is intended for developing musicians. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of jazz performance, introducing the concept of improvisation, and performing at home festivals and community events. Students interested in Jazz Two do not need to audition.

Jazz Combos

Jazz Combos are significantly smaller than the big bands and can have a wider variety of instrumentation. Combos emphasize improvisation, jazz theory, arranging, and composition. No prior experience is necessary, however proficiency on your instrument is required. Combos will meet once per week. Students interested in Jazz Combos must complete a Hempfield Jazz Audition.

All students interested in being a part of Jazz One or Jazz Combos must audition for Mr. Gumble. 


Auditions for Jazz One will take place on Tuesday, January 12th and Wednesday, January 14th. Auditions will begin at 3:15 and will run until 5:00 each day.

Audition Material

Audition material is available for download at bands.hempfieldsd.org. In addition to the material provided, students must perform scales as well as a short sight-reading excerpt.

2014 Jazz One Audition Materials

Auditions for Jazz One will take place on Thursday, January 2nd. Auditions will begin at 3:15 and will run until each student has auditioned. 

Audition Material > Take the "A" Train
NOTE: The recording contains three choruses of 32 bars (AABA format)
  • AUDITION MINIMUM: Perform Lead Sheet (one chorus as written - 32 measures)
  • OPTIONAL: Perform an improvised (or written) solo over the second chorus
  • OPTIONAL: Perform Lead Sheet for third chorus (with melodic embellishment)
You will not be penalized for not performing the optional material, however students that do attempt the optional material will receive preference when choosing "principal players" as well as soloists throughout the season. 

Duke Ellington - Take the 'A' Train

The best way to learn about jazz is by listening to as much as possible and studying the stylistic interpretations of the masters. This video is a wonderful place to start when exploring "Take the 'A' Train"

2013 Jazz Audition Material

Audition material for Hempfield Jazz One is now available! 

Auditions will be held on Thursday, January 3rd from 3:30 - 8:30.  Sign-up for an audition spot outside of the band room! 

Audition Format:
To ensure fairness, auditions will be blind.  Students will perform the lead sheet along with the recorded accompaniment followed by the unaccompanied etude. 

Students will receive scores in Quality (10), Timing (10), and Articulation (10).
