HMK Announcements

posted May 13, 2016, 8:39 AM by adam_gumble@hempfieldsd.org

Greetings, HMKers! I can’t believe that we are only ONE WEEK AWAY FROM HYPE DAY!!!! As we finish preparations for our first meeting on May 21st (1-4 PM), please be prepared for a variety of contacts from our staff as well as the HBBC (Hempfield Band Booster Club)!

Summer Schedule Adjustments

Rationale: Our Summer Schedule has remained the same over the past few years due to the consistency that we have had with staff availability. When the original schedule was posted in January, we were operating under the assumption that we would once again be dealing with the same instructional team and would need to cater to their schedules in order to provide the best instruction for our students (specifically, we needed to be as early as possible to avoid Danny’s In-Service dates in the Reading SD). As we experience a turnover in leadership, it is essential that evaluate our summer schedule in order to maximize our efficiency and effectiveness. Please note the following adjustments:

> Summer Percussion Sectionals moved to MONDAY nights (06.06, 06.13, 06.20, 06.27, 07.11, 07.18, 07.25)

  • Staff availability
  • Building availability (not sharing space with Color Guard)

> Removal of Summer Ensembles (Wednesday Night Rehearsals) on 06.29, 07.06, and 07.13 (9 Hours)

  • “Prime” dates for Vacations already submitted
  • Time can be better spent during Training Camp Week 2 (08.19) as we work to finish our competitive product with a full staff!
  • Dates can still be used for “off-site” sectionals scheduled by section leaders!

> Revised Training Camp Dates - Move to 08.08-08.11, 08.15-08.19 (9-5)

  • The earlier camp was established two years ago to work specifically with the schedules of staff members involved with the group at that time.
  • Due to increased staff involvement in Drum Corps International (and DCI Finals running a week later than usual this year), we run the risk of being severely understaffed if we run with our original dates.
  • The new schedule moves Camp dates closer to the start of school…yay!
  • Friday added on 08.19 in order to makeup for Removed Summer Ensemble Rehearsals

Absences: Based on the information that Mrs. Gumble has received regarding planned absences due to vacations, the revised schedule should actually work better for the majority of our membership! With that being said, please communicate any new attendance issues as a result of these changes with Mrs. Gumble (kelly_gumble@hempfieldsd.org).

Thank you for your time and GET PUMPED FOR 2016! :)

What a fantastic way to end the season! Thank you to all that had a hand in planning last night’s festivities!!!!

Final Thoughts…What a “Suite!" Journey!

This group did things this year that no other group of Knights have done and learned a lot along the way. They have succeeded once again in raising the bar for future bands and learned a LOT along the way...

Hype Day - first of its kind! We learned that the show reveal = "WHOA" or “Ummm…” every single year!

New Schedule - major improvement! We learned that more doesn't necessarily mean “better” and that an earlier camp leads to greater progress!

Opening Knight! We learned that we have the best Booster Club anywhere with amazing leadership and that BIG things can happen when many hands come together.

Bands of America - goal #1 for the year...MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Learned that there are amazing things going on outside of our normal sphere of influence and that seeing bands that are further along in the process can be inspiring. Also learned that the Marching Knights are indeed a player on a national scale, and we will look to do more Bands of America in the future.

Mini-Tour - proved that mental preparation is key (and that GPS systems can't be trusted)

PA State Champs @ West Chester University - STATE CHAMPS!

Annapolis - worst weather in history, made the best of it and once again made the HMK star a bit brighter in front of a star-studded DCI panel. We learned that cymbal players can double as field goal kickers, and that our Band Dads are stronger than YOUR Band Dads!

Championship Week - commitment to excellence at every rehearsal, leading to another amazing finals performance that we will all carry with us forever. Learned once again that numbers don’t mean anything and that if you work hard and strive for excellence, GREAT things happen!

Indoor Guard

The Indoor Guard informational meeting will be held this Thursday @ 6 PM (Hackman Auditorium).

HMK 2015 > As we move ahead, remember that RECRUITMENT IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY! If you know someone that would make a GREAT marching knight, let them know! Have friends in choir/orchestra? Now is the time to learn a secondary instrument! Have friends that would be great guard members? Indoor starts on Thursday! Folks that are interested in becoming HMK members in 2015 can contact me via email or drop by the band office!

Fundraising! > In addition to an overnight in Pittsburgh, we have discussed the possibility of taking a larger trip with HMK next year! While no details have been finalized, it would be wise to take advantage of the fundraising opportunities that become available through the Booster Club and HHS!!!! :)

This Saturday, we head to West Chester University to compete for the USBands Pennsylvania State Championship!

> Unlike Cavalcade, scores in USBands are determined by HOW WELL YOU PERFORM, not what you are asked to perform! We have been getting a LOT of credit this season for a well-designed show, however our score on Saturday is completely dependent upon the achievement of the performers.

> Nazareth is the most decorated band in USBands history. They are in our group and perform immediately after us!

> There is no “defense” in marching band, and we cannot control what the audience thinks of another band’s performance! (NOTE: Parents, judges do not score a band higher or lower depending on audience response, so show appreciation for all of the hard working students in each band by applauding at the appropriate times! Thanks!)

PA STATES TICKETS > PLEASE order pre-sale tickets for this event through the Band Booster Club! Tickets are $16 ($18 at the gate) and we need to sell 80 tickets for our “Fair Share.” Orders should be placed will be ready for pickup following Thursday night’s rehearsal. THANK YOU! :)
